“Carlisle smells like biscuits.”   

 

It does.  A constant and deliciously glorious waft of baked biscuits can be sniffed three hundred and sixty five days a year and seven days a week in our city.  We’re lucky ducks.  Depending on the time of year probably a million and one other things too.  But no matter where you are in the city you can’t escape that delicious waft:  The tummy-grumbling smell of freshly baked ginger biscuits or the rich, chocolate-y scent of a baking chocolate Bourbon biscuit dancing deliciously on the breeze.  

 

And it’s been like that since Mc Vities first took over the old Carrs cracker factory on Church Street in 1971.  Except we don’t just shout about it enough. We’re quick to talk about Carlisle as a Roman settlement and its tie to the northernmost boundary of the Roman Empire:  Hadrians Wall.  Or it’s beautiful cathedral that once served as a prison for Mary Queen of Scots.  And even its important contribution to the textile industry through Linton Tweed.  They’re all part of what makes our city great – along with lots of other things - but as bonkers as it might seem nobody shouts about how flipping lovely it is that on any given day, the air smells entirely of biscuits!! Utterly ridiculous but totally true.  

 

 

So we thought we’d make a ‘Carlisle Smells Like Biscuits’ candle – a unique, unmistakable buttery, biscuit-y concoction dreamt up purely out of a crackers idea that ‘wouldn’t it be marvellous to be able to bottle that delicious, familiar and comforting smell and sniff it whenever the heck you like!?’  Imagine being able to light it on a cold, dark day and to fill a room with the glorious smell of freshly baked biscuits?!  Better than that, imagine being able to put a lid on it, stick it in a little brown box and post it to anyone, anywhere in the whole wide world and send a little ‘Carlisle Smells Like Biscuits’ to them too?! 

 

And so here we are.  And if you’re here too we’re delighted to have you because you probably love biscuits nearly as much as us.  

 

We love the idea that biscuits unite us all in some shape or form.  That we all have a favourite, and that we’re all so passionate over how and when and what we should be eating them with.  And what better way to capture that, than in a locally designed and made candle, right here where it all happens?  An ode to another great part of Carlisle’s history and a way to capture it and give it to those you love as a little reminder of home.  Or keep it just for you.
